Abraham Polonsky

Filmmaker

Abraham Lincoln Polonsky was an influential American filmmaker, screenwriter, and novelist known for his politically charged work. He rose to prominence with the screenplay for the classic boxing film Body and Soul (1947) and his directorial debut, the film noir masterpiece Force of Evil (1948). His promising career was abruptly halted when he was blacklisted by Hollywood studios in 1951 for refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. After two decades of writing under pseudonyms, he officially returned to directing with the Western film Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here in 1969, cementing his legacy as a courageous and principled artist.
